About Dr Tariq Shafi

Treating Coronary Artery Disease

Since 1990

For more than 35 years, Dr. Tariq Shafi has focused on diagnosing and treating narrowing and blockages in the arteries supplying the heart. He has personally performed more than 22,000 coronary angioplasties and 70,000 coronary angiograms.

His practice includes both routine and complex angioplasty, with particular expertise
in difficult-to-treat blockages.

He currently performs more than 600 angioplasties and 2,000 coronary angiograms each year, with most angioplasties involving complex coronary disease.

Heart Attack Angioplasty — Available 24/7

Dr. Tariq Shafi is available day and night for emergency angioplasty during a heart attack, supported by his full cath lab team.

He personally performs the procedure, with coordinated care focused on opening the blocked artery promptly and restoring blood flow to the heart.

Direct contact with his team helps arrange urgent cath lab care and minimize delays.

Angioplasty for

Complex Heart Artery Blockages

1990 - 2000

Dr. Tariq Shafi treats a wide range of heart artery blockages, with particular expertise in:

  • Arteries that have been completely blocked for months or years.
  • Hard, heavily calcified blockages.
  • Narrowing in the main artery supplying the heart or where arteries divide.
  • Multiple blockages or long stretches of narrowing involving one or several arteries.
  • Recurrent narrowing within previously placed stents.
  • Blockages in the original heart arteries or bypass grafts after bypass surgery.
2000 - Present

Advanced Tools & Refined Techniques

Dr. Tariq Shafi combines specialized tools with advanced angioplasty techniques, selected according to the artery’s anatomy and the nature of the blockage.

  • Intravascular ultrasound (IVUS): imaging from inside the artery to assess disease and guide stent placement and expansion.
  • Intravascular lithotripsy (IVL) and rotablation: treatments for hard calcium within the artery.
  • Cutting, scoring, and high-pressure balloons: to prepare resistant blockages before stenting.
  • Drug-coated balloons: to treat selected areas of narrowing, including within previously placed stents.

Personal Planning &

Procedural Safety

Each angioplasty is planned according to the patient’s health and the complexity of the blockages.

Dr. Tariq Shafi personally performs the procedure, with close attention to artery preparation, precise stent placement, and full stent expansion to optimize the result and reduce the risk of complications.

Complex Coronary Intervention

Advanced Interventional Cardiology

Dr. Tariq Shafi has extensive experience in advanced coronary intervention, with particular expertise in complex (CTO, Bifurcations, LMS, Calcified Lesions) and high-risk PCI. His practice focuses on carefully selected treatment strategies for patients with challenging coronary artery disease.

Completely Blocked Arteries (CTO)

Long-standing complete blockages that may require specialized techniques to reopen the artery.

Left
Main Disease

Narrowing of the main coronary artery supplying a large part of the heart, where treatment requires particularly careful planning.

Disease at Coronary Branch Points

Narrowing where an important artery divides into two branches, sometimes requiring treatment of one or both branches.

Heavily
Calcified Arteries

Hard calcium can make angioplasty more difficult and may require specialised preparation before a stent can be placed.

Complex & High-Risk Angioplasty

Carefully planned angioplasty for patients whose coronary anatomy or overall clinical condition makes treatment more challenging.

Primary PCI for Heart Attack

Emergency angioplasty for a heart attack caused by a suddenly blocked coronary artery, aiming to restore blood flow quickly and limit damage to the heart muscle.
